Overcoming the challenges of job scarcity and layoffs for freshers

Fri Mar 24, 2023

Individuals coming from a college environment may struggle to adjust to the corporate working environment due to the perceived differences between the two settings. As a fresher, they may not possess all the necessary skills required on the job and may only have theoretical knowledge, making it challenging to adapt to practical learning. Therefore, there is a need for these individuals to seek out other freshers, connect with them, and share their experiences to overcome these challenges. Additionally, they need to have a willingness to learn and possess effective communication skills to help them succeed in the corporate world. Due to the economic impact of COVID-19, many companies in India had to lay off employees in 2022.

The pandemic's second wave in early 2022 led to a surge in layoffs, particularly in industries such as hospitality, travel, and tourism. According to a report by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), around 18 million salaried jobs were lost between April and July 2022.

The manufacturing and construction sectors were also hit hard by the pandemic, leading to job losses in these industries as well.

In 2023, freshers looking for jobs will need to focus on developing skills that are in demand in the job market. This may include digital skills such as coding, data analytics, and digital marketing.

Other areas that may offer good job prospects for freshers in 2023 include healthcare, renewable energy, and e-commerce.

With the rise of remote work, there may be opportunities for freshers to work for companies based in other countries, provided they have the necessary language and communication skills.

Additionally, there may be a greater emphasis on soft skills such as adaptability, collaboration, communication and problem-solving, as companies look for employees who can thrive in a rapidly changing business environment.

The Indian startup ecosystem has been badly hit by a funding winter, resulting in over 22,000 layoffs across more than 70 startups. However, the ecosystem has proven resiliency, and new opportunities in areas such as healthcare, technology and many others are emerging. The employment crisis in India is critical, with about 33 million job seekers unable to secure work, making it essential to introduce effective measures to generate more employment opportunities. Despite the challenges, the ecosystem's resilience offers hope for the future.

To succeed in the job market of 2023, freshers will need to focus on continuous skill development and lifelong learning, as the job market continues to evolve at a rapid pace.
